ARCTIC FLOWERS I spent over 21 years living and teaching in Alaska. I taught in the village of Glennallen adjacent to the Wrangel - St. Elias National Park. Most of my Alaska experience was above the Arctic Circle in the Inupiaq villages of Noorvik, Kotzebue, Point Hope, Kaktovik, and Barrow. My experience was wonderful and I have a great respect for the people and the land. When I lived in Arctic Alaska, I often heard it referred to as a harsh, barren environment. I found the Arctic to be an amazingly beautiful and mystic place. In order to fully appreciate the splendor of the Arctic or any environment, you have to spend time with that environment. You have to become intimate with the nuances of seasons, plants and animals. Many of the plants and flowers grow horizontally instead of vertically so you really have to look closely. As soon as the Arctic sun returns all life gets busy. New flowers and plants appear daily. The Arctic landscape is like a living kaleidoscope of changing colors and forms. |
